Chapter Sixteen

Elianna

The golden key flashed to life when it touched Elianna’s hand, the familiar hum of magic nearly bringing her to tears. After all she’d experienced over the past week, all she’d felt, she’d never imagined Hiedra was on their side, but she was. The idea of the winged female transferring power to her skirted around the edges of her mind, but the metal object in her hand stole her focus. Hiedra had left her alone in the bedchamber only moments after placing the key in her hand, and Elianna had yet to move. She couldn’t. All she could do was stand in the middle of the room and watch the metal object flash like a beacon. He would come for her.

The twisting of the doorknob jolted her attention, a momentary warning for her to hide the key before she was caught with it and had it ripped away from her again. She dropped to the floor, sliding it into her slipper just before Zoe entered the room.

“Oh, good. You’re awake,” Zoe said as she closed the door behind herself. The rapid beating of Elianna’s heart calmed at the entrance of her friend. She wished she could tell Zoe about the key, about Hiedra’s plans, but it was too dangerous. She couldn’t tell anyone. Not if she wanted to get away without getting caught. “Hiedra said you were sick, had me bunking in another room.”

Elianna nodded; she was a terrible liar, so omission was the only way she could safely react. Pulling her dress over her head, she stilled as the key continued to pulse beneath her foot. “Will you be getting ready for the party?”

Zoe nodded, reaching out her hand. “I was waiting so we could go together. Are you ready to go? Do you need more time?”

How considerate her friend was for her needs only made Elianna feel more guilty. If she told anyone, she had to tell Zoe. She didn’t know if she could live with herself if she didn’t, so she pulled her best friend into a hug and told her everything.
